What Is Exercise Medicine?
Exercise medicine (EM) is a subspecialty that applies exercise physiology to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Unlike sports medicine, which focuses primarily on injury, exercise medicine addresses the systemic effects of structured physical activity across a broad range of conditions.
The Evidence Base
Decades of research confirm that regular physical activity reduces all-cause mortality by 30–35% and lowers the incidence of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and several cancers. Yet fewer than 25% of Americans meet the minimum recommended activity guidelines.
Exercise is the closest thing to a wonder drug that we have.
